Tuna Fishing

IMG_6344.JPG

The Cape is also home to some of the best Bluefin Tuna fishing in the world. They are an elusive species which requires a great deal of patience to catch. Smaller relatives of these giants are Yellowfin and Big Eye. These are not as common (near the shores of the Cape), but can be found in great numbers out in the canyons (thanks to the Gulf Stream).

How to Land a Tuna…

  • Take it easy, share the rod if exhausted (first 2 mins are electrifying)

  • Slowly gain on the fish, do not let the line touch the boat

  • Wait for the fish to “pinwheel,” (go around in circles)

  • If fish is sub 60” then gaff under jaw

  • If bigger, use harpoon if keeping and aim just the gill plate

  • It’s NOT over until the tail ropes on and secured to the boat
