Striped Bass Fishing On Cape Cod

Cape Cod has miles of sand flats on both the Nantucket Sound and Bayside beaches, calm back bays and estuaries and salt water rivers that are ideal for saltwater Fly Fishing...the Goose stocks major brands like Thomas and Thomas, Sage, Gloomis, Simms, Cortland and more for the Cape Cod saltwater fly fisher man.

For fly fishing on Cape Cod, we recommend an 8-10 wt rod. Occasionally, wind and weather will cooperate enough that you can get away with a 7wt, but in most places, a 9 wt is the perfect choice to punch weighted flies through an afternoon Cape Cod "breeze". Far and away, a chartreuse and white clouser is the most popular fly and will catch them 98% of the time....but be sure to have some crab patterns and big profile baitfish flies on hand just in case the stripers get picky about things. For most striped bass fishing from a boat, a 6'6-7' medium or medium heavy rod is the best choice for most people. 8' and above can be unwieldily in smaller to mid size boats. Some people prefer to use a medium lite in that size rod as it can feel a little more sporting and makes it easier for repeat casting due to the lighter weight.

The connections on wire line can be tricky to learn and can be a real weak spot for those new to wire line fishing.. But, don't worry. The guys in the shop can rig you up so all your knots are tied correctly to offer maximum strength. When you buy a wire line set up from us, a local expert will be setting you up with the right amount of backing and wire for the conditions you will be fishing in during your trip.

Goose Hummock is just a short drive from the famed Outer Beaches of Cape Cod. The surf record of 73lbs, which stood for years, was caught right down the street at Nauset Beach in November! Goose Hummock stocks hundreds of popular, high quality surf rods, reels, lures and combos that will let you hit the outer beaches with just the right gear.

Although some surf guys prefer a lighter tackle approach and use 7-8' medium rods, most will fin 9-10' rods will be easier to use more of the time. In some locations on the Cape, casting distance is critical for success. For those spots, guys in the know tend towards 10-12 footers.

If you aren't into fly fishing, but want to chase stripers on lite " sporting" gear, the Goose has tons of salt water worthy lite tackle for you to chase them with. Using lighter tackle does not have to mean catching smaller fish. There are times during the summer when big stripers key in on small, thin profile baits and light tackle is the only way to deliver lures of similar size. There is nothing like catching a 40+inch striped bass on fresh water weight tackle meant for largemouth bass. You will be in for the fight of your life!

Wire line certainly puts fish in the boat when the weather heats up, but the gear is heavy and clunky for some folks. Vertical jigging gives you a lighter tackle option to fish deep when the water gets hot, but with much lighter fishing tackle.
