March 31, 2026
For our first report of the season, it's a trout story.
Last weeks Capewide trout stocking kicked off the unofficial start of the 2026 fishing season. The state stocked some beautiful fish in the first round-- we are getting alot of pics of some giant browns, super colorful Brookies and some nice tiger trout over the past few days. What are they catching them on? The usual suspects- Berkley Power Bait, shiners , night crawlers, spoons and spinners are all producing as they should post stocking.
Trout take a bit of time to acclimate to their new homes, but they should start moving away from their stocking points at the landings , spread out throughout the pond and feeding more naturally this week.
As temps begin to climb this week, we expect to see the bass and pickerel fisheries to kick up a notch. Bass should begin to exhibit prerspawn behavior and start moving into shallower water.
On the saltwater front, the first reliable reports of herring are starting to trickle into the shop. The water temps in Nantucket Sound are 42.1 degrees at the time of this writing (up a couple of degrees from two weeks ago.) Remember, at 45 degrees, Tautog will begin to move inshore and hold over stripers will begin to kick a little bit. Mackerel and squid will also begin to show up as we hit these temps. Given the right winds and weather, we aren't too far away from things heating up a bit. Stock up and get your gear in order so you are ready for the first bite.
Don't forget to sign up for the annual Goose Hummock Kids fishing festival. This event has grown every year in terms of participation and excitement. This year looks to be our biggest event ever with almost 600 kids signed up already. It's the can't miss kid event of the year. We still have room, but please register on the website today if you are planning on attending.
