3 Under Rated Saltwater Lures That Catch Big Fish

If you’ve fished the Northeast for stripers, bluefish, or false albacore, you’ve probably heard of Deadly Dicks—but they kind of look like a simple relic of the "80's hanging next to the photo realistic lures, so they’re often overlooked. These slim, chrome-plated metal lures mimic small baitfish like sand eels, silversides, and rain bait. They shine brightest when fish are keyed in on small, fast-moving bait, and their long-casting design makes them a surf caster’s dream.

Best Use: Cast into breaking fish and retrieve with a steady, fast crank. They’re especially deadly on albies and bonito in the fall.

Soft plastics get plenty of love, but Savage Gear’s Sandeel is a gem that doesn’t see nearly enough time tied on. It perfectly imitates one of the ocean’s most common baits—sand eels—and has an erratic darting action when twitched. Rigged on a jighead, it sinks naturally and draws strikes from stripers, weakfish, and even fluke.

Best Use: Bounce it along sandy bottoms or swim it just off the structure where sand eels congregate. Stripers in particular can’t resist them when sand eels are thick.

The Flying Pencil by Patrick Sebile, has a common body shape but uncommon castability and action. The side wings enhance aerodynamics and give the lure lift once it's in the water. Low air friction ribs reduce air resistance and add water turbulence. That means the Flying Pencil casts farther and moves more enticingly than any other bait of its kind.
