ASK THE GOOSE..." What's your favorite surf rod?"

Goose GM Nick P. know how to find fish and he knows how to catch fish. If you follow us on our website or socials, you have undoubtably seen many of Nick's videos where he is hammering fish and talking tackle. In addition, this is a guy with decades of experience in tackle buying at the wholesale and retail level. He knows his stuff.

When we asked Nick what his surf stick(s) of choice were ,he answered as follows:

"What's my favorite surf rod......now that's a tricky question.

For starters, I like nice tools......a nice tool that's the right tool usually means having a mountain of tools.....I think the best way to pick a favorite is to weight versatility heavily and focus on a series of rods not just a single rod....."

"For high performance versatility that isn't a fragile glass cannon......I'd have to say the Salt X 2 series of surf rods is my clear favorite....if forced to pick a single rod....

I'd probably have to say the 7'7" Salt X 2 Medium or the 9'7" Salt X 2 medium heavy.

The 7'7" is very unique in that it comes in at around 7 ounces.....yet has tremendous power and may be the most sensitive surf rods on the market.  I pair mine with a Saltiga 5000 and use between 15 and 20lb braid and it throws everything in it's weight range to the moon. "

"What's truly unique about the Salt X 2 series of rods is the lack of weight isn't achieved by using less material.  The carbon used is truly unique and the blanks still retain thick blank walls....many brands use quality carbons but try to achieve action weight reduction by using less material on the same mandrel to create the same action......"

"The Salt X2 uses more high end carbon material in a thinner diameter which goes a long way in created a Rugged high performance rod...and we all know Rugged and high performance don't usually come in the same package when talking Surf casting gear.

The Fuji Titanium Framed Slim Sic guides won't rust or corrode - so the rod looks newer longer while being rung with guides that weight a third less.  The Fuji TVS 17 seat with integrated back up lock makes for smooth transitions and no jagged edges under hand when casting and retrieving.....The TVS seat will also fit a wider variety of reel sizes and foot shapes when compared to standard tube seats. "

"Then there's the butt....many rods use generic rubber buts made from vinyl material....Salt x 2 uses a FUJI BRC model butt, which is made of synthetic rubber which is soft and has some tack to it.....this is espeically nice since it grips waders, belts and pants securely when braced where others slip and skate off....

What's a true added bonus.....the 7'7" length is at home on a boat and kayak as much as it is on the bayshore and beaches."

"Now when it comes to traditional Surf rods where you're kicking out pencils, big metal lips and bombing casts over breakers.....I'll go to the 9'7', 10'7, and 11' models.

These longer rods share the same carbons and components, just up sized, and instead of single foot guides they incorporate Fuji RV and KW double foot guides.  Let a cast rip with 30lb braid on reels ranging from Van Staal 75-200 and all you hear is the whisper of tremendous line speed racing through the guides.......no distance robbing flutter of line slap due to generic guide placement......."
