June Saltwater Fishing Forecast for Cape Cod

After the cold, wet May that produced some of the best spring big striper fishing in recent memory, we will take our best Goose Hummock guesstimate of what June might hold in store for Cape Cod fishermen. Historically, June is one of the best months of the year to fish the waters around Cape Cod. Hopefully the weather will stabilize into summertime norms, but we will have to wait and see. Water temperatures should rise quickly, baitfish will flood into the bays ,sounds, ocean beaches and nearly every major inshore species becomes active. From striped bass crashing sand eels at dawn to bluefish blitzing along the beaches, June typically offers consistent action for anglers fishing from shore, kayak, or boat.

Striped Bass Outlook

June is prime time for striped bass throughout Cape Cod. Migrating fish are fully established across the region, and anglers can expect excellent opportunities in:

  • The Cape Cod Canal

  • Buzzards Bay

  • Cape Cod Bay

  • Monomoy

  • Nantucket Sound

  • Outer Cape beaches

Early in the month, larger bass often feed aggressively around herring, squid, and sand eel concentrations. Topwater plugs, soft plastics, needlefish lures, and live eels all become productive depending on conditions.

Best Times

  • Dawn and dusk remain the most consistent bites

  • Moving tides in the Canal are critical

  • Overcast days can produce excellent daytime action

  • Night fishing improves dramatically as water warms

Productive Techniques

  • Topwater spooks during calm mornings

  • Paddle tails around rips and current

  • Jigging in deeper channels

  • Live eels after dark

The Canal should see steady action throughout June, especially during strong east tides. Expect schools of slot fish with chances at bass over 40 inches.

Bluefish Return in Full Force

Bluefish numbers typically build quickly during June. Schools often invade Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, and the south side beaches in good numbers.

Smaller “cocktail” blues arrive first, followed by larger fish later in the month. Surface feeds can erupt suddenly around schools of bunker and mackerel.

Best Bluefish Lures

  • Metal casting jigs

  • Topwater lures

  • Epoxy jigs

Anglers fishing Cape Cod in June should keep a wire leader available at all times because June blitzes can appear without warning. Bluefish can run through a tackle box full of lures in an hour if you fish without a wire leader. That's good for us, but bad for you!

Fluke Fishing Heats Up

Fluke fishing usually becomes very productive by mid-June, especially in:

  • Nantucket Sound

  • Vineyard Sound

  • Buzzards Bay

  • Around Martha’s Vineyard shoals

Drifting bucktails tipped with squid or Gulp-style baits remains one of the most effective methods. Anglers targeting shallow sandy areas in 15–40 feet of water often find quality fish this time of year.

Black Sea Bass, Togs and Scup

Bottom fishing really picks up a couple of notches in June as black sea bass, togs and scup become abundant across the Cape.

Where to Look

  • Rock piles

  • Artificial reefs

  • Wrecks

  • Hard-bottom structure

Sea bass fishing can be excellent in deeper water, while scup provide fast action closer to shore and around docks, jetties, and harbors.

Squid strips, clams, and sea worms all work well.

Tuna Season Begins Offshore

June also marks the beginning of serious offshore tuna fishing east of Chatham. Bluefin tuna begin feeding heavily on sand eels, herring, and mackerel along offshore banks and temperature breaks.

Early season fish can range from school-sized tuna to giants, depending on bait availability and water conditions.

Weather windows become important offshore, but calm June periods can produce excellent trolling and casting opportunities.

Surfcasting Forecast

Surfcasters should see improving action throughout the month, especially:

  • Along the Outer Cape beaches

  • Monomoy

  • Sandwich and Canal access points

  • South side beaches

Needlefish plugs, soft plastics, pencils, and swimming plugs all become reliable producers as bait increases.

Night tides around the new and full moon periods are often especially productive for larger striped bass.

June may be the most balanced month of the saltwater season on Cape Cod. Water temperatures are comfortable, bait is abundant, and nearly every major species is active somewhere around the Cape.

Whether targeting striped bass in the Canal, fluke in Nantucket Sound, or tuna offshore, anglers should find steady opportunities throughout the month. Flexibility remains key — follow the bait, watch the tides, and keep multiple rod setups ready because June conditions can change quickly.
