Today's Report:
05/01/25.
Happy May! The month the saltwater fishing kicks off on Cape Cod has finally arrived. Yippeee!!!
Now, when exactly May saltwater fishing in these parts begins is nearly always dependent on water temps and the magic number is 50 degrees( for newly arrived, migrating fish-guys in the know will have been catching holdovers for a couple of weeks now).
We are getting really close to that number now with an average between 47-49 on the Nantucket Soundside.( you can monitor water temps here). As of this writing, West Dennis is 49 degrees. We are one tide and / or one strong blow away from hitting the mark....in other words, it may be worth your while to go take a few casts on the upper Nantucket Soundside beaches soon.
The conventional wisdom says to wait until Mothers Day to start fishing for Stripers and ,to be honest, in most popular spots on Cape Cod, that is probably true. However, in the back bays and estuaries, you will be able to find some shallower, darker bottom stretches of water that will warm to 50 faster. The holdovers that are here will have more active metabolisms and can be caught.
As far as actual reports to this point, we have heard of the occasional fish being taken at the east end of the canal and in Buzzards Bay. Not lights out fishing yet, but it's starting...
On the freshwater front, trout fishing is crazy good.( see pic of beautiful Brown Trout caught by Edwin Vagenas this morning below
Prespawn bass and pickerel fishing has also been awesome. Soon, the bass will be heading to the beds and you will have to change tactics a bit. Remember to gently release the females if you get'em.
Herring are in thick in the runs...we now just need the temps and it's on!!
